Who We Are

How We Started

New Mexico’s shortage of healthcare providers is a full-blown crisis. In the Spring of 2025, the Doña Ana County Medical Society sponsored a series of listening sessions about the shortage. How severe it is, what is causing it, how it compromises access to care. A nonpartisan group of citizens responded by creating Patients Primero to advocate for change.

The catalyst for change comes from the people.

 Our Goals

Educate voters about factors driving the provider shortage.
Create partnerships to improve access to quality healthcare.
Collaborate with legislators to enact comprehensive, sustainable legislation.

The Bottom Line

  • All of us are or will be patients. We need access to quality healthcare in our community.
  • Patients who are harmed deserve adequate compensation.
  • Legislators are responsible for looking at the entire healthcare system to create a healthy environment for providers and access for patients.
The challenges are complex and require a comprehensive set of solutions.
Other states have faced challenges to access and struck a balance between:
  • protecting patients who have been harmed,
  • protecting everyone’s access to healthcare,
  • creating an environment that supports healthcare providers, and
  • allows attorneys to conduct viable practices.

New Mexico can do the same.
